Technical description

The IA32 system call emulation functionality in arch/x86/ia32/ia32entry.S in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36-rc4-git2 on the x86_64 platform does not zero extend the %eax register after the 32-bit entry path to ptrace is used, which allows local users to gain privileges by triggering an out-of-bounds access to the system call table using the %rax register. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of a CVE-2007-4573 regression.

Remediation

Check the references section for vendor advisories and patches from linux. Update linux_kernel to the latest patched version. If immediate patching is not possible, review the CVSS vector to understand the attack surface and apply compensating controls such as network segmentation or access restrictions.

How can CyberStrike help with CVE-2010-3301?

CyberStrike is an open-source, AI-augmented pentesting engine. Rather than flag a version number, it tests whether an issue like CVE-2010-3301 is actually reachable in your own applications and APIs, then verifies each finding before reporting it. That tells you if the weakness is a real, exploitable risk in your environment or a false positive you can safely deprioritize.
