Technical description

The sk_run_filter function in net/core/filter.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36.2 does not check whether a certain memory location has been initialized before executing a (1) BPF_S_LD_MEM or (2) BPF_S_LDX_MEM instruction, which allows local users to obtain potentially sensitive information from kernel stack memory via a crafted socket filter.

Remediation

Check the references section for vendor advisories and patches from linux. Update linux_kernel to the latest patched version. If immediate patching is not possible, review the CVSS vector to understand the attack surface and apply compensating controls such as network segmentation or access restrictions.

How can CyberStrike help with CVE-2010-4158?

CyberStrike is an open-source, AI-augmented pentesting engine. Rather than flag a version number, it tests whether an issue like CVE-2010-4158 is actually reachable in your own applications and APIs, then verifies each finding before reporting it. That tells you if the weakness is a real, exploitable risk in your environment or a false positive you can safely deprioritize.
