Overview

CVE-2016-8624 is a medium-severity vulnerability affecting haxx curl. It was published on July 31, 2018 and has a CVSS 3.0 base score of 5.3 (MEDIUM).

This vulnerability has a CVSS 3.0 base score of 5.3, rated MEDIUM. It can be exploited remotely over the network. No authentication or special privileges are required for exploitation.

Technical Description

curl before version 7.51.0 doesn't parse the authority component of the URL correctly when the host name part ends with a '#' character, and could instead be tricked into connecting to a different host. This may have security implications if you for example use an URL parser that follows the RFC to check for allowed domains before using curl to request them.

Remediation

Check the references section for vendor advisories and patches from haxx. Update curl to the latest patched version. If immediate patching is not possible, review the CVSS vector to understand the attack surface and apply compensating controls such as network segmentation or access restrictions.
