Published Apr 20, 2017 trustedfirmware CWE-295 EPSS 3.42% (88th pctl)

Overview

CVE-2017-2784 is a high-severity vulnerability affecting trustedfirmware mbed_tls. It was published on April 20, 2017 and has a CVSS 3.0 base score of 8.1 (HIGH).

This vulnerability has a CVSS 3.0 base score of 8.1, rated HIGH. It can be exploited remotely over the network. No authentication or special privileges are required for exploitation.

Technical Description

An exploitable free of a stack pointer vulnerability exists in the x509 certificate parsing code of ARM mbed TLS before 1.3.19, 2.x before 2.1.7, and 2.4.x before 2.4.2. A specially crafted x509 certificate, when parsed by mbed TLS library, can cause an invalid free of a stack pointer leading to a potential remote code execution. In order to exploit this vulnerability, an attacker can act as either a client or a server on a network to deliver malicious x509 certificates to vulnerable applications.

Remediation

Check the references section for vendor advisories and patches from trustedfirmware. Update mbed_tls to the latest patched version. If immediate patching is not possible, review the CVSS vector to understand the attack surface and apply compensating controls such as network segmentation or access restrictions.
