4.4 · MEDIUM
Published Jul 9, 2020 mozilla CWE-203 EPSS 0.34% (26th pctl)

Overview

CVE-2020-12402 is a medium-severity vulnerability affecting mozilla firefox. It was published on July 9, 2020 and has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 4.4 (MEDIUM).

This vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 4.4, rated MEDIUM. It requires local or adjacent network access to exploit. Some level of privileges is required for exploitation.

Technical Description

During RSA key generation, bignum implementations used a variation of the Binary Extended Euclidean Algorithm which entailed significantly input-dependent flow. This allowed an attacker able to perform electromagnetic-based side channel attacks to record traces leading to the recovery of the secret primes. *Note:* An unmodified Firefox browser does not generate RSA keys in normal operation and is not affected, but products built on top of it might. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 78.

Remediation

Check the references section for vendor advisories and patches from mozilla. Update firefox to the latest patched version. If immediate patching is not possible, review the CVSS vector to understand the attack surface and apply compensating controls such as network segmentation or access restrictions.
