CVE-2020-24586

3.5 · LOW
Published May 11, 2021 ieee EPSS 5.76% (93th pctl)

Overview

CVE-2020-24586 is a low-severity vulnerability affecting ieee ieee_802.11. It was published on May 11, 2021 and has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 3.5 (LOW).

This vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 3.5, rated LOW. It requires local or adjacent network access to exploit. No authentication or special privileges are required for exploitation.

Technical Description

The 802.11 standard that underpins Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA, WPA2, and WPA3) and Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) doesn't require that received fragments be cleared from memory after (re)connecting to a network. Under the right circumstances, when another device sends fragmented frames encrypted using WEP, CCMP, or GCMP, this can be abused to inject arbitrary network packets and/or exfiltrate user data.

Remediation

Check the references section for vendor advisories and patches from ieee. Update ieee_802.11 to the latest patched version. If immediate patching is not possible, review the CVSS vector to understand the attack surface and apply compensating controls such as network segmentation or access restrictions.
