Overview

CVE-2020-26558 is a medium-severity vulnerability affecting bluetooth bluetooth_core_specification. It was published on May 24, 2021 and has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 4.2 (MEDIUM).

This vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 4.2, rated MEDIUM. It requires local or adjacent network access to exploit. No authentication or special privileges are required for exploitation.

Technical Description

Bluetooth LE and BR/EDR secure pairing in Bluetooth Core Specification 2.1 through 5.2 may permit a nearby man-in-the-middle attacker to identify the Passkey used during pairing (in the Passkey authentication procedure) by reflection of the public key and the authentication evidence of the initiating device, potentially permitting this attacker to complete authenticated pairing with the responding device using the correct Passkey for the pairing session. The attack methodology determines the Passkey value one bit at a time.

Remediation

Check the references section for vendor advisories and patches from bluetooth. Update bluetooth_core_specification to the latest patched version. If immediate patching is not possible, review the CVSS vector to understand the attack surface and apply compensating controls such as network segmentation or access restrictions.
