Published Dec 29, 2021 celeryproject CWE-77 EPSS 3.88% (90th pctl)

Overview

CVE-2021-23727 is a high-severity vulnerability affecting celeryproject celery. It was published on December 29, 2021 and has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.5 (HIGH).

This vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.5, rated HIGH. It can be exploited remotely over the network. Some level of privileges is required for exploitation.

Technical Description

This affects the package celery before 5.2.2. It by default trusts the messages and metadata stored in backends (result stores). When reading task metadata from the backend, the data is deserialized. Given that an attacker can gain access to, or somehow manipulate the metadata within a celery backend, they could trigger a stored command injection vulnerability and potentially gain further access to the system.

Remediation

Check the references section for vendor advisories and patches from celeryproject. Update celery to the latest patched version. If immediate patching is not possible, review the CVSS vector to understand the attack surface and apply compensating controls such as network segmentation or access restrictions.
