Published Feb 24, 2022 nodejs CWE-295 EPSS 8.37% (95th pctl)

Overview

CVE-2021-44531 is a high-severity vulnerability affecting nodejs node.js. It was published on February 24, 2022 and has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.4 (HIGH).

This vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.4, rated HIGH. It can be exploited remotely over the network. No authentication or special privileges are required for exploitation.

Technical Description

Accepting arbitrary Subject Alternative Name (SAN) types, unless a PKI is specifically defined to use a particular SAN type, can result in bypassing name-constrained intermediates. Node.js < 12.22.9, < 14.18.3, < 16.13.2, and < 17.3.1 was accepting URI SAN types, which PKIs are often not defined to use. Additionally, when a protocol allows URI SANs, Node.js did not match the URI correctly.Versions of Node.js with the fix for this disable the URI SAN type when checking a certificate against a hostname. This behavior can be reverted through the --security-revert command-line option.

Remediation

Check the references section for vendor advisories and patches from nodejs. Update node.js to the latest patched version. If immediate patching is not possible, review the CVSS vector to understand the attack surface and apply compensating controls such as network segmentation or access restrictions.
