CVE-2023-29383

3.3 · LOW
Published Apr 14, 2023 shadow_project CWE-74 EPSS 0.43% (36th pctl)

Overview

CVE-2023-29383 is a low-severity vulnerability affecting shadow_project shadow. It was published on April 14, 2023 and has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 3.3 (LOW).

This vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 3.3, rated LOW. It requires local or adjacent network access to exploit. Some level of privileges is required for exploitation.

Technical Description

In Shadow 4.13, it is possible to inject control characters into fields provided to the SUID program chfn (change finger). Although it is not possible to exploit this directly (e.g., adding a new user fails because \n is in the block list), it is possible to misrepresent the /etc/passwd file when viewed. Use of \r manipulations and Unicode characters to work around blocking of the : character make it possible to give the impression that a new user has been added. In other words, an adversary may be able to convince a system administrator to take the system offline (an indirect, social-engineered denial of service) by demonstrating that "cat /etc/passwd" shows a rogue user account.

Remediation

Check the references section for vendor advisories and patches from shadow_project. Update shadow to the latest patched version. If immediate patching is not possible, review the CVSS vector to understand the attack surface and apply compensating controls such as network segmentation or access restrictions.
