Overview

CVE-2024-27023 is a medium-severity vulnerability. It was published on May 1, 2024 and has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 5.5 (MEDIUM).

This vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 5.5, rated MEDIUM. It requires local or adjacent network access to exploit. Some level of privileges is required for exploitation.

Technical description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

md: Fix missing release of 'active_io' for flush

submit_flushes

atomic_set(&mddev->flush_pending, 1);

rdev_for_each_rcu(rdev, mddev)

atomic_inc(&mddev->flush_pending);

bi->bi_end_io = md_end_flush

submit_bio(bi);

/* flush io is done first */

md_end_flush

if (atomic_dec_and_test(&mddev->flush_pending))

percpu_ref_put(&mddev->active_io)

-> active_io is not released

if (atomic_dec_and_test(&mddev->flush_pending))

-> missing release of active_io

For consequence, mddev_suspend() will wait for 'active_io' to be zero

forever.

Fix this problem by releasing 'active_io' in submit_flushes() if

'flush_pending' is decreased to zero.

Remediation

Check the references section for vendor advisories, patches, and mitigation guidance. If immediate patching is not possible, review the CVSS vector to understand the attack surface and apply compensating controls such as network segmentation or access restrictions.

How can CyberStrike help with CVE-2024-27023?

CyberStrike is an open-source, AI-augmented pentesting engine. Rather than flag a version number, it tests whether an issue like CVE-2024-27023 is actually reachable in your own applications and APIs, then verifies each finding before reporting it. That tells you if the weakness is a real, exploitable risk in your environment or a false positive you can safely deprioritize.
