Overview

CVE-2025-34288 is a medium-severity vulnerability affecting nagios nagios_xi. It was published on December 16, 2025 and has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 6.7 (MEDIUM).

This vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 6.7, rated MEDIUM. It requires local or adjacent network access to exploit. Some level of privileges is required for exploitation.

Technical Description

Nagios XI versions prior to 2026R1.1 are vulnerable to local privilege escalation due to an unsafe interaction between sudo permissions and application file permissions. A user‑accessible maintenance script may be executed as root via sudo and includes an application file that is writable by a lower‑privileged user. A local attacker with access to the application account can modify this file to introduce malicious code, which is then executed with elevated privileges when the script is run. Successful exploitation results in arbitrary code execution as the root user.

Remediation

Check the references section for vendor advisories and patches from nagios. Update nagios_xi to the latest patched version. If immediate patching is not possible, review the CVSS vector to understand the attack surface and apply compensating controls such as network segmentation or access restrictions.
