Overview
CVE-2025-40178 is a known-severity vulnerability. It was published on November 12, 2025.
Technical description
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
pid: Add a judgment for ns null in pid_nr_ns
__task_pid_nr_ns
ns = task_active_pid_ns(current);
pid_nr_ns(rcu_dereference(*task_pid_ptr(task, type)), ns);
if (pid && ns->level <= pid->level) {
Sometimes null is returned for task_active_pid_ns. Then it will trigger kernel panic in pid_nr_ns.
For example:
Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000000000000058

Reason, not just scan
It reasons through your app's logic the way a human pentester would, so it finds flaws signature scanners miss.

Every finding is proven exploitable before you see it, which cuts the false positives that bury real risk.

How can CyberStrike help with CVE-2025-40178?
CyberStrike is an open-source, AI-augmented pentesting engine. Rather than flag a version number, it tests whether an issue like CVE-2025-40178 is actually reachable in your own applications and APIs, then verifies each finding before reporting it. That tells you if the weakness is a real, exploitable risk in your environment or a false positive you can safely deprioritize.
